This is an excellent project for practicing new cross stitch techniques and will look amazing stitched in the original teal Frances used, or as a red or black sampler.
Frances’s original design contains a few spacing errors but is even more delightful for this.
I particularly love that Frances included her interest in Astrology in her sampler by stitching Astrological symbols of the planets and the Zodiac.
It is recommended this sampler is stitched on linen over 2x2 strands due to some of the fractional stitches used in the chart. This sampler is suitable for all levels of ability.
Always work your top stitches in the same direction for the whole project.
Strands = embroidery floss.
Threads = threads of fabric, linen etc.
Frances stitched her sampler mainly with full cross stitches using 2 strands of floss over 2 threads of linen, including some straddled full cross stitch (offset by one thread).
It also includes 4 sided stitch (stitched one strand of floss over 2 threads).
And Algerian eye or eyelet stitch.
To add extra detail, in the zodiac and astrological symbols, she also includes both vertical and horizontal half stitches which are stitched over 2 x 1 threads, and a few quarter stitches stitched over 1 x 1 threads.
Please refer to the included ‘Stitch Symbol Reference Guide’ for details of how these stitches appear on the chart and how to stitch them.
This design is 268 stitches wide x 245 stitches tall. The finished size is 19.1" x 17.5"(48.6 cm x 44.5 cm) when stitched over 2 threads on 28 count Evenweave linen. The photograph shows the original design stitched by Frances Sweetlove.
